Volvo Car USA failed to disclose to its customers that its model year 2013-2016 Volvo vehicles contained defective pistons, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
A group of Volvo owners claim their Volvo vehicles were equipped with faulty 2.0L 4-cylinder or 2.5L 5-cylinder engines on account of a piston defect.
The owners claim Volvo intentionally conceals the issue, which is caused by a design defect in the piston rings and/or piston heads located in the vehicles’ engine.
“The piston rings cannot properly clear engine oil off the side of the cylinder wall during the downstroke and instead push that oil up where it can coat the top of the piston head, enter the combustion chamber and ignite,” the Volvo class action states.
Vehicle owners claim that, over time, the defect damages the pistons and other engine components, ultimately leading to a loss of power.
The piston defect injures vehicle owners who must pay out of pocket to either repair or replace the damaged engine parts of the engine in its entirety, the Volvo class action alleges.
“A replacement of the piston rings and/or pistons costs thousands of dollars, and the cost for replacing a Subject Engine is well over $10,000,” the lawsuit states.
Vehicle owners argue that the piston defect also presents a safety risk for drivers who may have to deal with their engine suddenly losing power, putting themselves, their passengers and pedestrians at risk.
“A sudden loss of power poses a clear-cut safety risk – it can prevent the driver from accelerating, maintaining speed, engaging the brakes and even adequately controlling the steering wheel, all of which drastically increase the risk of collisions,” the Volvo class action states.
Volvo owners claim Volvo is guilty of fraudulent omission, breach of express warranty, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and a number of state-specific acts.
Volvo owners want to represent a nationwide class and multistate subclass of consumers who purchased or leased a 2013-2016 Volvo containing the piston defect.
Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.
Volvo recalled more than 460,000 of its older vehicles in November after discovering that their airbags can explode and send shrapnel flying into the cabin.

I started experiencing the same problems. How/when can I join or learn about the outcome of the lawsuit?
I have a 2016 XC 60 and have the same problem with oil consumption. I reported this problem before warrantee was up and was told nothing was wrong by the Volvo mechanic. My son had the same year Volvo, same model and was having same problems so got rid of it under mechanic recommendations. Volvo should make it right. I’ve owned Volvos since 1987 but no more if this is not resolved.
I own a 2015 Volvo v60 and I am experiencing the same issues. Huge oil consumption. The local Volvo dealer says to will cost $6500 to fix but this is an obvious design flaw making my car a known lemon with few options.
I’m in the same boat! Just got off with the dealer and they want us to pay $1000 to do a piston job. What if they tear the engine apart and find more damage??? I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do
We have 2 Volvos in those model years / both burning oil. How do we get added to the class action lawsuit?
I own a 2013 S60 T5 and after fighting with Volvo they finally replaced pistons under warranty. Had to go thru a dance with the dealer and Volvo corporate!
I have read many forums for the first time ever! I have had just about $7000 in work done to my car over a 2year spand due to all of these issues! I recently had an oil change done at a different place ( other than volvo) and found that my engine was damaged!! After taking it to Volvo they were quick to push it off on the other company and slapped me with a $17000 bill for a new engine rebuild!!!! I went ahead and got a new vehicle already but im pissed! I want in on this lawsuit because the piston change was one service that i had done!!!!! Im in Louisiana but im willing to get in on this!
my 2015 Volvo XC 60 purchased new, one owner using one quart of oil every 300 to 400 miles for last 10,000 miles. Now with 91k miles and engine failure on multiple cylinders. Meticulously cared for this car. All maintenance done according to Volvo requirements. My car looks new but with engine failure. $20,000 total cost for a new engine + the labor. I discover this class action lawsuit. Volvo has a responsibility here. My car when into “engine failure/cripple mode” while driving …..I’m thankful to God I did not wreck or cause injury to another person due to this Volvo engineering defect.
Volvo is responsible for their poor engineering.
I have a 2015 Volvo S60 that is starting to burn 1qt of oil approximately every 1,000 miles. The dealer says there is no issue with the S60s, and Volvo only provides oil consumption tests on the XC90s. It seems like Volov could de better for their customers.
Hi. I own a 2015 Volvo V60 SW T5 that is burning a quart of oil every three weeks. Volvo says it’s most likely the defective O-rings but first the dealership wants me to spend $750 on an oil consumption test.
We bought a new XC90 T6 in 2016 by 2020 we started having oil problems. Fought the dealership in Cincinnati who said engine was scored but then had to follow Volvo procedures and run an oil test, it failed. Volvo then said it was only the pistons and replaced them (2 months w/o car). It was just a bandaid for the problem. November 2021 engine light came on again. After about 30 days they said engine was bad. We now having to wait 6 weeks for an engine and we leave for Florida in 3 weeks for 3 months. Only option since it took so long Volvo to say engine was bad was find a new car. Well, no one had new cars on their lots, so we had to go with a 2 year lease on a XC90 T6 with the dealership. It was not up to the car we had to trade in for low trade in value. We also had to pay the dealership $500 for the piston work the first time and $890 for the bad engine. They said they gave us the $890 off the lease car price but now that I thought about it the dealership said after the first $500 piston work the car was covered for life for any problems related to the piston work. So a total night mare with our dealership and Volvo. We also had no loaner car for about 3 weeks on the second problem until I called the President of the dealership. How do we get involved with the Class Action ??
I purchased a 2015 Volvo S60 and am experiencing the same oil useage. Now carry oil in trunk.
I own a 2016 XC90 and burn at least 3 quarts per oil change. How can I be added to the lawsuit?
I have a 2015 Volvo V60 with 2.0 4cyl with the same oil consumption issue. Burning a quart in much less than 1,000mi.
I own a volvo 2015 t5 … experiencing all the same issues. I have to put in oil every 2 weeks, and when I accelerated from being parked the car would jerk. I got a third party mechanic to look at it, spark plugs and oil trap are bad now, need replacement and they found the open bulletin. I went to dealership, the manager wanted me to do an oil consumption test for 2,500 miles and my concern was, what happens if the car breaks down between those miles or the car does it on the freeway? Low and behold not even 4 hours after leaving the dealership the car struggles to accelerate and does a jerky rev movement, right as I’m needing to switch lanes between 2 semi trucks- this is not safe!
I have a Volvo 2016 that burns oil every 300-500 miles volvo dealership states that it’s normal to burn that much. I have every single maintenance receipt and Volvo decline to fix problem
I bought a 2016 volvo xc 90 in 2021 out of state in North Carolina. I am the 4th owner in Washington state. Beautiful car but the first week it messaged me Im a pint low of oil several months later I finally brought in after timely oil changes and constantly putting in a quart or two at a time. I called volvo in Fife, Wa. Three hours away from home. I dropped it off to get it tested. They are currently replacing all the pistons and rings but want me to replace the catylidic converter which will cost me over a couple thousand dollars to replace. I told them I will be satisfied with Volvo when they replace the converter with No charge to me. Plus, I forwarded them a letter from my mechanic and this Lawsuit to motivate them . Still waiting on their response, hoping they will grant my request. After all, the car is fairly new and the converter should last the life of the car or most of it!! I also bought an extended warranty with Volvo up to 100,000 miles so they should grant the coverage especially since my mechanic stated in a letter that the cause of premature failure of the converter is linked to faulty piston design. I have 5 Volvos in my family and to be honest the 2005 has been the best so far! I also heard the quality, safety and reliability is no longer with Volvo due to China involvement with car parts! So, sad beautiful looking car but not reliable. Hoping after this the car will run properly.
We purchased 2015.5 Volvo V60 from new and after 50k miles it started taking an extra quart of oil after 5k miles after oil change. now, @ 64900 miles and #3 cylinder is only holding 20 psi, where as the rest are slowly losing pressure. 29 May 2022, Took our V60 to Volvo and they said we need a new engine and will cost $15k to replace. We have only done service through Volvo because of the warranty. We took our V60 to a specialist and was told that the piston ring seats are too far worn to allow the cylinder to hold pressure and causing blow-by and loss of power on display. How do we get added to the lawsuit?
2015.5 S60. Same Issue and they will not even discuss it. I am looking to sue one way or another.
My 2015 XC60 T6 started burning oil at a rate of 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles when I bought it used last year with 62,000 miles on it. Now it has 70,000 miles on it and it is burning at a rate of 1 quart every 400 miles. Records shows that the previous owner complained about excessive oil use well before the warranty was expired. Now I am holding the bag.
sure did Volvo S80 , 2.0 L 4 cylinder engine ……1 quart of oil every 500 mi
I have a 2016 Volvo that burns so much oil we have to carry bottles of oil in the trunk for road trips.
My 2012 Volvo S60 has had this problem going on 3 years and I have been in discussions with my dealer and Volvo since then. I have all my service records in compliance with Volvo standards and have provided these. I After several months of working on this issue Volvo agreed to pay to replace the piston rings if there was no engine scoring, but if there was I was on the hook for reassembling and putting the engine back in as I was not paying $14,000 for a new engine. Then they reneged on that saying I had to do all these tests which I did and then waited and waited for another 2 years. I pressed the dealer today and was told Volvo will contribute $500 to any needed repairs. What gives? How can I be added to this lawsuit.
I have a 2015 60v that burns a quart of oil every 600 miles. Volvo dealer says it will be $6500 to fix.
V60 D4, burning so much oil! Have had to add 2 litres in 6 weeks!
My 2013 Volvo S60 is burning about a quart of oil every 1000 miles.
My 2015 V 60, T5 is a serious oil burner
How do you get added to the class action lawsuit?

Problems with my2015 XC60. It has been burning oil for the past 18 months
I have a 2012 volvo s60 that burns well over a quart every 1000 miles
I have a 2016 XC90. Gone through about 18 quarts of oil in the last 60 days. Dwaerlship ran an “oil consumption test” and are presenting the findings to Volvo. Car has solely been serviced at a volvo dealership. This ought to be interesting.
Have you had any resolution yet? We are in same boat. Just did oil consumption test and dealer recommended piston job. Local dealer is dealing with corporate now I guess
Yes! I have a 2016 Volvo V70 that burns about 1qt of oil every 1000 miles.
