Nylon-bodied pedals are becoming an ever more popular budget option, saving on both cost and weight. If designed well, there’s no reason why their performance can’t be on a par with aluminium alternatives, but often we see cheaper pedals falling short of the mark.

Common complaints are axle housings that are taller than the rest of the platform, or pins that are just way too short to offer enough grip. Thankfully, TAG Metals – new to mountain biking, but big in the motocross world – hasn’t succumbed to these traps.

Its T3 pedals ride as well as some costing twice as much, thanks to their decent-sized 103 x 105mm platform and foot-cupping profile, with just over 1mm of concavity on each side.

The removable 4mm pins aren’t massive, but their narrow diameter helps them dig into your shoes. As with all pedals of this type, the downside of their nylon construction is that although they graze over obstacles with ease, they’re not as durable as metal equivalents.

After a month’s worth of testing, my clumsy footwork has already started scuffing away at the edges on my test set. They’re still spinning smoothly on their axles though, and I anticipate no problems from the tried-and-tested DU bushing and sealed-bearing internals.

Their 365g weight (pair) is around what I expect.
