FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – Hyundai Motor America will recall approximately 1,000 2021 Hyundai Palisade sport utility vehicles (SUV) due to a potential brake-fluid contamination issue which might result in reduced braking effectiveness.

According to the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-840, the mineral-oil contamination could cause the cup seals in the brake master cylinder to expand.

“Expanded brake master cylinder inner cup seals could reduce hydraulic pressure applied by the master cylinder resulting in reduced braking at the wheels. The driver may experience longer brake pedal travel, a change in pedal feel, and/or extended stopping distance,” the report stated.

This condition could result in extended stopping distances, which could increase the risk of a crash, added NHTSA.

Hyundai is investigating the cause of the contamination. The company is not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the situation.

Owners of the 995 Hyundai Palisade midsize SUVs will be instructed to have the brake fluid flushed and master cylinder replaced as the remedy for the problem.

Notifications are scheduled to begin Dec. 22 to Palisade owners and Hyundai dealers.

In addition, approximately 100 Palisades are being recalled in Canada.

I started experiencing “soft” braking in my 2020 Palisade which was purchased in March of 2020. I would have to pump the brake pedal 2-3 times for the brakes to engage. Sometimes the brake pedal would go all the way to the driver’s floorboard. I took it to a local Hyundai dealership who told me I “had a Master Cylinder failure”. They stated they had “never seen anything like it and were perplexed because there were no open campaigns on my vehicle”. This issue may be more expansive than Hyundai initially thought! Very scary!

Here in Chile, I had the same problem with my wife’s Palisade 2021. Hyundai told us at first it was tire pressure problem, but when the longer break pedal travel continued; I went back to the garage and told them; to check completely the car before returning it; she almost had an accident.
