Senator Magnus Abe has given an explanation to why he cannot sue the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike who alleged that the former secretary to the state government embezzled N4billion meant for the road construction project in Ogoni.
Abe who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, explained that Governor Wike’s allegations were part of political campaigns, adding that he had long cleared the air and proven his innocence in the accusations and even made peace with Wike to engender development and growth of the state.
It would be recalled that in September 2016 during the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of a road project in Bodo City, Gokana LGA of Rivers, Wike accused Abe of abandoning the Kpobie-Bodo road project after collecting over N4bn to complete the project.
Responding to questions from one of the young professionals in an interactive session in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Abe explained that a sustained tearing down of political contemporaries and enemies over politics would only hamper the growth of the state.
“Nyesom Wike is my friend. That time that he made that video we were campaigning, he went to Gokana to campaign for his party and he made those accusations there. I went to Ikwerre to go and reply to him and we attacked ourselves.
“We don’t go to court over such things, when we finished that elections, during the thanksgiving service, I invited him, he came and he said that he fought me, we have forgotten about that and that is now in the past.
“If we continue to tear each other down endlessly over politics, the society cannot move forward, so people should just go and rest. I’m not suing Wike, I’m not fighting him, I’m not quarrelling with him. In the course of our politics, if we disagree, we will disagree, that is what it is, so just forget it.”
Abe further stated that after he became a lawyer, he refused to run to anyone for financial assistance to acquire his lawyer’s regalia, but he preferred to borrow wig and gown from his friends in the legal profession until he was able to acquire the lawyer’s wig and gown for himself.
“As a lawyer, today people graduate from law school, they are calling you to give them money to go and buy a wig and grow.
“I finished law school, nobody bought wig and gown for me, every time I have a case in a court, I have to go and borrow wig and gown from my friends who have wig and gown if they were not in court and there was no phone, so I went to Rumumasi to go and look for my friend Orubo and I will ask, are you going to court this morning, if he is going, that means I cannot get it.
“So, I will go to Mile one to meet another friend and ask are going to court this morning and if he’s not going, I will borrow his wig and gown.
“The point I’m making is that if you want to prosper if you want to grow, you must be prepared to do the hard work, you don’t just go, people don’t materialize at the top of the totem pole, no, you have to work your way up there, you have to be ready to put in the grind that takes you to the top.”
Reading a communiqué on behalf of the youths and young professionals, the Executive Director, Magioni Environmental Safety Company, David Makama requested senator Abe avail himself of the governorship candidacy in the state in 2023.
“We the coalition of Rivers youths, student groups, community-based organisations, faith-based organisations, youths professionals of Rivers state extraction, haven heard, interacted, deliberated and reviewed the leadership qualifications, experiences, achievements and political-economic prospects of your excellency, distinguished Senator Magnus Ngie Abe, Mene Suanu one of Ogoni, we thereby unanimously resolve that you make yourself available for next year’s election as governor of Rivers state”.
